Thomas Dignan

Thomas Dignan has been engaged in the craft of bow making for over 40 years.

His interest in music and woodworking fused into a passion to understand the mysteries that surround the creation of beautiful and wonderful sounding bows.

Thomas worked in some of the finest violin shops in Chicago and Boston before opening his own workshop in Boston, close to Symphony Hall in 1983 !

The Boston office has been closed but Thomas continues working daily in his home studio. Focused exclusively on making the finest violin, viola, cello and bass bows, and contributing to the tradition of the craft that has inspired him for so many years.

All of his bows are crafted using simple hand tools and traditional methods utilizing a very select inventory of rare hardwoods.

His goal is to put into the musicians hand a bow that will help him achieve the full potential of sound and expression from their instrument.

Thomas has earned 17 Grand Prizes in Europe and the United States, including three gold medals for his outstanding work.

Thomas is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers and active participant in the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative which works to create a sustainable path forward for the natural resources utilized in the trade.
